Main Bath: Slowly Chugging Along

Summer is a busy time, so I'm always amazed that every year we start doing a reno in the late spring despite knowing we are going to be away more weekends than not in the summer! But oh well, we made some progress.

Truth be told, Rob made more progress than me. I am the regulated baby minder, I suppose, which is frustrating at times, since I want to learn more skills, but if I were to do it then it would take way longer. But, whatever. When it comes to tiling and painting I'll be more involved.

Since the last post back in May, we have gotten the room ready for tiling and I have worked on my cabinet.

The Window

Rob and his dad did this when I went to a craft beer show with my sister. Lucky me!

We opted for a crank out to make the window appear larger. My job in all of this was to hack away at the spray insulation after it dried.

The Tub
We removed the tub quite easily, thankfully, and no water damage underneath! We were going to install the new tub the same day, but, of course, we were missing a plumping piece, so it sat in our upper hallway for a few weeks. Finally, we got the piece and Rob installed it. I did help, but, as usual, I was the baby minder. Sigh.

We went with an American Standard Lowe's special. It cost us less than $200. Sorry Marcy, you don't get to bathe in style.

Toilet
Rob removed the toilet. As this is the 4th toilet we've removed in this house, I did not take a photo of it.

The Walls

We removed all the old insulation and replaced it with new. Rob had to build out the wall slightly at one end of the tub.

After this, while I watched the baby (yet again), Rob hung the cement board.

And last night (when little lump was asleep) we mudded and taped the drywall.

The Vanity

I've been hacking away at the vanity cabinets while the baby sleeps and when she goes to visit Grandma and Grandpa on Thursday afternoons. They are almost done, but to prevent spoiling the big before/after, I'll only show up to a certain point!

Ugh - just so dated

As I said in my first blog post about this months ago, we decided to stain/paint the cabinets instead of buying a new vanity. I also liked having a project to work on.

I found this stain at Benjamin Moore that I wanted to use, but it required sanding down the cabinets. Oh well! I like sanding. :)  So I sanded all eight cabinet pieces and the cabinet itself!

My little workstation with the orbital sander, my mouse sander I got for free at work, and the dremel.

Sanding all these damn things took forever

We're keeping this thing too, which I also had to sand. Didn't they do a great job painting AROUND the shelf? Slow clap.

The difference between sanded and unsanded. The wood actually has a nice grain.

All ready for stain

There was also this part at the side by the toilet that the old owners decided to... paint? And paint it ... blue? I don't know what they were thinking, but when I tried to sand it I discovered that a) it was on there THICK and b) the toilet was blocking me from using the big sander. So Rob suggested we buy a thin piece of plywood and just cover it. We bought the piece and everything, but then I had to change directions anyway!

After I had sanded down everything I tried to use the stain. I bought this stuff at Benjamin Moore called Saman, but when I applied it, I found that it just wasn't the colour I was looking for, so I went and bought some paint instead.  What colour did I choose? You'll have to just wait and see!

Helping to remove the floor (little does she know how many renos she'll be involved with in her life)

What's next?
- finish my cabinets
- exhaust fan + electrical
- finish tub plumbing
- tile x2
