Main Floor Reno: Floors, Cabinets and Countertops!
After what felt like a long month, we finally have a floor and a kitchen again! We made breakfast for the first time yesterday and managed to overcook a celebratory lamb roast in our new convection oven for dinner.
But, I'm getting ahead of myself! After the big demo at the end of July (see my last post), we still had a ton of work to do to get ready for our tile guy.
Yes, for this renovation Rob and I actually hired out some contractors (tiling, cabinets, and drywall). We wanted it to look fabulous, and while I'd say we aren't bad at all at these tasks, sometimes it pays to have professionals do it. Also, it would have taken us 90 years.
After tearing apart the house, what else was there to do?
Well, we didn't get all the demo done that weekend. Beneath the tile our dear friends hacked up for us, there were two layers of linoleum. Rob and I spent an entire Friday removing that down to the plywood and removing wayward peices of drywall from the ceiling.
After that came the lovely job of removing all the staples from the floor. There were thousands.
We also tarped up the house again, which, in my eyes, was far worse than anything else we had to deal with.
But then something momentous happened! Our tiler came! How did we survive this with a toddler and two dogs? Three words: Country Paws and Kait. We kenneled Ruger for a week, and Marcy, Denny and I lived in Kait and Kevin's rental unit (which is quite awesome. I would live there if I were on my own)!
After the tile was complete we had to rough-in the potlights for the new lounge area, Rob and his dad spent two days doing all the electrical in the kitchen, and we had to remove and replace the destroyed backsplash drywall in the kitchen.
We had to do all of this in preparation for the absolutely stupendous cabinets we now have! I'm very glad we went with Bamco!
We also have our countertops!!! I am in love. I can't stop gushing over them. StoneX was fabulous.
Here we go! The big reveal!!!!
Yesterday Rob and I spent two hours arguing over where to put all our stuff. I'm sure it'll need some modification, but we're almost moved back in! THIS room that is. The rest of the house is still out of commission!
Sighed note (this is a pun. Sigh. Get it?)
We also have new appliances. While I like them, I am NOT happy with Goemans Kitchener. Exceedingly unhappy in fact. One might even called it ... pissed off! Last Friday when they delivered the appliances, they put a massive gouge in the hours-old cabinet door. I didn't notice at the time because we were fixing the doorjam we had to remove to get the fridge in.
What did Goeman's do about it? F*ck all! I emailed our saleswoman right away, who said she forwarded it on to the delivery department. I called their manager twice last week and left a voicemail and didn't even get a response. Super unprofessional. Buy your appliances somewhere else. Feel free to read and like my Google review of their store where I call them a joke!
Ugh! Happy photo to make me forget about them!
What's Next?
Our drywaller is currently working away on the rest of the main floor! Once he is done, I'll prime and paint! Our goal is to have the backsplash and pot lights/pendants done in the kitchen by mid-October.
Our To Do list is still quite long, as but least we have a beautiful kitchen!
